One Genus or Two? Evaluating Whether Gracile and Robust Capuchin Monkeys are Validly Classified as Separate Genera Based on Craniofacial Shape

چکیده

Abstract Assessments of whether closely related species should be classified into more than one genus have been a longstanding source controversy in primatology. For example, researchers hold differing opinions about cebine or two genera. In this study, we investigated craniofacial shape is reliable taxonomic indicator among cebines and statistically evaluated the magnitude differences observed gracile robust capuchin consistent with two-genus framework. We quantify using 3D landmark data taken from 72 surface models, representing five ( Cebus albifrons, C. capucinus, olivaceus , (Sapajus) libidinosus (S.) macrocephalus ). find that although significant exist between capuchins all four regions (face palate, basicranium, calvarium, frontal region calvarium), pairs does not support being separate The calvarium face palate show highest groups, both are good predictors, showing correct classification rates 97% 96%, respectively. At species-level, only measure consistently shows high (84-97% for combined-sex analyses). Our findings suggest often assigned to Sapajus may appropriately considered as under single-genus framework based on evidence.

How different are robust and gracile capuchin monkeys? An argument for the use of sapajus and cebus.

Capuchin monkey behavior has been the focus of increasing numbers of captive and field studies in recent years, clarifying behavioral and ecological differences between the two morphological types: the gracile and the robust capuchins (also referred to as untufted and tufted). Studies have tended to focus on the gracile species Cebus capucinus (fewer data are available for C. albifrons, C. oliv...

Capuchin monkeys are sensitive to others' welfare

proposer’s payoffs constant across the two planks but varied the size of the payoffs to the receiver’s chamber to investigate if and when capuchins were willing to provide the receiver’s chamber with a large reward (a marshmallow) instead of a small reward (a celery piece). This led to two kinds of trials: ones in which the proposer delivered marshmallow to his own chamber and chose either mars...

Testing whether two chaotic one dimensional processes are dynamically identical

Consider the situation where two individuals observe the same chaotic physical process but through time series of different measured variables (e.g., one individual measures a temperature and the other measures a voltage). If the two individuals now use their data to reconstruct (e.g., via delay coordinates) a map, the maps they obtain may appear quite different. In the case where the resulting...

On loss aversion in capuchin monkeys.

Chen, Lakshminarayanan, and Santos (2006) claim to show in three choice experiments that monkeys react rationally to price and wealth shocks, but, when faced with gambles, display hallmark, human-like biases that include loss aversion. We present three experiments with monkeys and humans consistent with a reinterpretation of their data that attributes their results not to loss aversion, but to ...

The effects of ecology and evolutionary history on robust capuchin morphological diversity.

Recent molecular work has confirmed the long-standing morphological hypothesis that capuchins are comprised of two distinct clades, the gracile (untufted) capuchins (genus Cebus, Erxleben, 1777) and the robust (tufted) capuchins (genus Sapajus Kerr, 1792). In the past, the robust group was treated as a single, undifferentiated and cosmopolitan species, with data from all populations lumped toge...
